Fashionably flexible responsive web design
with Andy Clarke
Responsive design has made designing flexible websites fashionable again, but there’’s more to being fashionably flexible than technology or using CSS3 media queries.
So this unique workshop — hosted by Andy Clarke (http://www.stuffandnonsense.co.uk), designer, author and speaker — puts the design back into responsive design. Andy will teach you how to design from the ‘content out’, instead of from the ‘canvas in’.
He’ll demonstrate how to separate design from layout and if you work with designs made in Photoshop, he’ll show how to deconstruct a design into its components (colour, texture and typography) before reassembling it for a fluid continuum of devices from, mobile phones to desktops and everything in between.
If you’re a web designer or developer, you’ll learn how to:
- Adapt layouts for smartphones, tablets and more
- Make decisions about navigation, content modules and layout
- Optimise typography for different screens
What hardware/software do you need?
All attendees will receive the full slide deck and example files before the workshop. Else you only need your brain and enthusiasm!
SMACSS: Scalable and Modular Architecture for CSS
with Jonathan Snook
The SMACSS Workshop is a full day of instruction and exercises on writing HTML and CSS using a flexible and modular approach that will improve team efficiency and minimize problems with growing projects. It takes the e-book and brings it to life with practical examples and in-depth discussion.
What prerequisite skills do you need?
You don't need to have played with the latest and greatest CSS3 and you don't need to know what a vendor prefix is. You will, however, need to know a selector from a property and have a general understanding of CSS-based layouts.
What hardware/software do you need?
- Bring your own laptop (Mac or Windows) with your favourite text editor
