Topic: Mobile Augmented Reality
We are all surrounded by objects and places which can be linked with
digital information. When using a mobile device, such as a smart
phone, the real world is enriched. Applications go far beyond
“simple navigation.” Mobile Augmented Reality is a new
user interface which merges the real and digital worlds for pleasure,
learning, practical and professional applications.
First, the user must download to the smart phone an application for
Mobile AR. With this running, the user will open their video camera
and have on their screen a dynamic interface offering interaction
beyond what only the “real world” can offer. Mobile AR
spans everything from manufacturing, surgical applications to mountain peaks!
During this special Mobile Monday experiential (and experimental)
event, there will be the opportunity to really explore Augmented
Reality first hand. You will have a Mobile AR “tour
guide” for a small group. There will be games, services
for students, professionals, and tourists. Bring your smartphone and
be prepared to really discover the place where you live or visit.
Format for this meeting: This meeting will focus
entirely on interactive demonstrations and having first-hand exposure
to Mobile Augmented Reality. We will be in small groups interacting
with places and objects in the old city of Zurich. After the
demonstrations, we will all gather at a public meeting place to
discuss what we experienced and to network.
Before the meeting: To prepare for this special
Mobile Monday event, you may want to install an AR application or
“browser” to have your personal phone for use during the
event. If you have an iPhone 3GS, please go to the iPhone AppStore and
download one of the Mobile AR Browsers or any Mobile AR application.
You can find them by searching for Augmented Reality. You will find
them provided by:
1. Layar
2. Mobilizy
3. metaio
4. GeoVector
There are also many application providers. We will update this page
with a list of those we will be featuring in our demonstrations.
If you have a Nokia N95, N97 or other model with GPS or which meets
the requirements, you may go to the Ovi Store and download the
Mobilizy AR Browser for Symbian.
If you have an Android phone, go to the Android Application
Marketplace and search for Augmented Reality, you will be able to
select applications from:
1. Layar
2. Mobilizy
3. GeoVector
If you do not have a smart phone: Don’t worry!
Come anyways! We will have some extra phones for sharing with people
who are eager to experiment but have not yet purchased a smart phone.
During our networking time, we will gladly welcome everyone, even if
you were unable to take part in the hands-on portion of the event.
