"What is the future of
journalism in the Social Media Age?"
Social media tools such as Twitter,
live-blogging, Facebook and other social networking applications
have become big news as they rapidly transform the media in
real-time. These tools are emerging as essential to reporting and
they’re providing audience interaction zones for news outlets
with many benefits. But the real-time web brings with it
professional pitfalls and highlights ethical dilemmas central to
contemporary journalism.
Media140 Sydney will probe these issues through keynote
addresses and panel discussions designed to educate and promote
debate within the media industry about a variety of social media
platforms and practices.
With prominent and influential speakers including ABC Managing
Director Mark Scott, presenter Mark Colvin, Crikey political
editor Bernard Keane, ABC national political Editor Chris
Uhlmann, The Australian Columnist Caroline Overington and
popular blogger and columnist Mia Freedman joining many other
contributors, this event promises to be ground-breaking.
"Media140 is at the
cutting edge of social media, exploring the disruptive
nature of the real-time web in journalism – in London
we explored the whole debate of 'truth versus speed' and
the commercial imperatives driving journalism. With such
a wealth of talent supporting Media140 Sydney it will
undoubtedly be a seminal event generating a wealth of
debate and discourse from an industry in crisis"
Ande Gregson, Founder media140
The event will be held on the 5th & 6th November 2009.
