The applicability of general concepts and procedures for safety and
health prevention to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the
hospitality and tourism sector appears to be very limited. While a few
best practice examples do exist, pertinent knowledge differs across countries.
Accordingly, the overall goal of this workshop is to provide an
overview of the concepts and approaches to (a) reach SMEs in the
hospitality and tourism sector (e.g., hotels, restaurants) in
different countries, and (b) to provide an overview of prevention
methods and procedures deemed appropriate and/or efficient in
different regions.
Given this overall goal, the workshop will encompass three parts:
In part one, Dr. Peter Bärenz will provide a brief overview
of the ´state of the art´ on what appears to work when
focused on SMEs in the hospitality and tourism sector.
In part two, best practice examples submitted by workshop
participants from different countries/regions will be presented and
discussed. Contributions for best practice examples are very welcome
until July 15, 2011, and can be submitted using the following link:
In part three, Prof. Dr. Michael Bosnjak will discuss how Social
Marketing principles may aid implementing and evaluating safety and
health prevention programs in SMEs of the hospitality and tourism sector.
Deliverables:
The participants will get an overview of the concepts for safety
and health prevention in SMEs of the hospitality and tourism sector
applied worldwide.

evaluating safety and health programs for SMEs in the hospitality and
tourism sector.
