A Case Study of Data.gov.uk
What is open data? How can it be appliedwithin a social media
context? What are some of the pitfalls to avoid? Come along to learn
and participate in a session at the Central Office of Information
(COI) which focuses on government data and the role of open data in
our society.
Data.gov.uk is the main UK government portal for open data
and plays a vital role in public transparency, demonstrating that the
government is being proactive and actively encouraging the re-use of
data. This includes using social mediato share information. Members of
the UK Governmentteam will give a demonstration of the site,
explaining its purpose and its relationship with social media.
Visualisations and case studies of some of the most effective uses of
open data will be presented.
We will also discuss the community elements of the site and
how the site is enabling government agencies to engage with and
support the wider community and how the community can feedback into government.
About COI
COI is the Government's centre of excellence for marketing and
communications. Working with the Cabinet Office and the Government
Communications Network (GCN), we set standards and provide guidance
across a range of marketing and communications issues, including the
rapidly evolving world of social media.
COI technically develops and project manages data.gov.uk on behalf
of the Cabinet Office who lead the project on behalf of the UK
Government.
